On 7 July 2022, the government of The Gambia and the United Nations in The Gambia launched the Education Plus Initiative, joining other champion countries.

The initiative was launched by the First Lady of The Gambia, H.E Fatoumata Bah Barrow in Banjul with Ms. Seraphine Wakana, UN Resident Coordinator, Ms. Sirra Ndow, UNAIDS Country Director; UNFPA country representative, Ms. Ndeye Rose Sarr; UNDP Resident Representative in The Gambia, Ms. Aissata De and Mr. Gordon Jonathan Lewis, UNICEF Representative in The Gambia.

In attendance were Government dignitaries, the United Nations co-lead agencies, young women leaders, educators, teacher-parent associations, civil society, students, young people, and community leaders in The Gambia.

Β· 75% of adolescent girls and young women and 68% of adolescent boys and young men aged 15–24 years do not have knowledge of HIV prevention.
Β· 23% of young women aged 20-24 were married before 18 years (DHS 2019-20)
Β· 75% of all adolescent girls and young women aged 15–19 years have undergone FGM.
Β· 40% of adolescent girls and women aged 15–49 can make decisions concerning their Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights.
