On 17 July 2022, Education Plus was launched by African leaders meeting at the Africa Union Mid-term summit in Lusaka, Zambia.

The launch was held in partnership with the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), convened by the First Lady of Zambia, H.E Mutinta Hichilema under the patronage of H. E Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, the President of Zambia. H.E Hichilema committed Education Plus Initiative as aligning with Zambia’s efforts for reform.

· Over 200 adolescent girls and young women aged 15-24 are infected with HIV every week.
· Lower secondary education out-of-school rate is 28% for females.
· Upper secondary education out-of-school rate is 62% for females.
· Lower secondary education completion rate for girls is 48%.
· Upper secondary education completion rate for girls is 27%.
· 31% of adolescent girls are married by the age of 18 years and 6% by the age of 15 years.
· About one in three women aged 15-24 has experienced intimate partner violence in the past year.
· 31% of women aged 20-24 give birth before age 18 and 3% before age 15.
· 36% of girls aged 15-19 and 44% of those aged 20-24 who are in a marriage/union are currently using any method of contraception.
· 48% of women and girls, aged 15-24 are involved in decision-making about contraceptive use.
· In Zambia, 56% of employed females aged 15+ years are living below the international poverty line.
· Unemployment rate for females above 15 years is 14%.
