The government and United Nations in Malawi launched the Education Plus initiative at the high-level intergenerational dialogue on generation equality and women’s leadership on 8 April 2022.

Malawi’s First Lady, Monica Chakwera, led the launch, with more than 200 adolescent girls and young women, civil society and community leaders in attendance. Dignitaries included: the former Malawian President, Joyce Banda; the former Liberian President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf; the Vice President of Liberia, Jewel Taylor; Mary Chilima, the spouse of the Malawi Vice President; and Roselyn Makhumula, the Secretary for the Ministry of Gender, Social Welfare and Community Development.

Β· More than 51% of new HIV infections are among adolescent girls and young women in Malawi.
Β· Only 27% of girls enrol in secondary school, only 13% will attend, and less than 5% will complete secondary education.
Β· Malawi has a high rate of teenage pregnancy at 29% of adolescent girls aged 15–19 already mothers or pregnant with their first child.
